Markdown and the markup used in Mediawiki (the wiki software that powers Wikipedia) is not the same. They're related in the sense that both are less verbose ways of entering html (with some added features), but I doubt that they are related to each other in any other sense. Markdown can't do everything HTML can, but both are mark-up languages.
